How-To: Clean Your Front-Loading Washer

Do you ever wish that your washing machine smelled like a field of fresh flowers rather than a moldy corner? We've been there!

If you have a front-loading washer, the sour odor is likely due to water build-up in the bottom rubber seal, where water collects unnoticed and forms a breeding ground for mold.

Peel back the gasket gently and wipe it down with essential oils on a damp cloth - we recommend a few drops of Spark Naturals Lavender and/or Melaleuca essential oil.

Follow the wipe-down with a "cleaning cycle" or a normal wash with hot water, adding 1 cup of vinegar and 5-6 drops of Spark Naturals Lavender or Melaleuca essential oil.

RESEARCH: Thyme EO for Cramp Relief

RESEARCH: Thyme essential oil vs ibuprofen for cramp relief!

This EXCITING new research (published in 2014) compared the effect of Thyme essential oil and ibuprofen on the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. The clinical study was conducted on 84 students of Babol University of Medical Sciences with primary dysmenorrhea. The students were randomly assigned to three groups receiving thyme essential oil, ibuprofen and placebo. In all three groups, with the beginning of pain, 200 mg capsules and 25 drops of essential oil were given every 6 hours for two consecutive cycles.

The results? Both drugs (thyme essential oil and ibuprofen) were effective in reducing the severity of dysmenorrheal pain. But the pain decreased more in thymus vulgaris group versus ibuprofen. Pain reduction between these two groups was not [statiscially] significant, but the differences between the placebo group and each of the other groups were statistically significant.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Thyme essential oil worked as well as ibuprofen and even a small amount better to reduce dysmenorrheal pain.

Cinnamon Buttermilk Bran Muffins

I made these again last week and they got quickly devoured! These are full of beneficial ingredients from bran to molasses and I love the boost the Cinnamon essential oil gives them!

Cinnamon Apple Bran Muffins
(recipe adapted from Taste Food)

You will need:
•1 cup oat bran
•1 cup buttermilk, shaken
•1/4 cup butter, room temperature
•1/3 cup brown sugar
•2 large eggs, room temperature
•1/4 cup molasses
•1 tsp vanilla extract
•1 cup all-purpose flour
•1/2 cup whole wheat flour
•2-3 drops Spark Naturals Cinnamon essential oil
•1 tsp baking powder
•1/2 tsp baking soda
•1/2 tsp salt
•1 cup grated apple
•1/2 cup finely chopped pecans, plus some for the muffin tops (opt)

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease mini muffin (or normal muffin) tin. Mix buttermilk and bran together in a small bowl and set aside. Cream the butter and sugar, then add eggs, vanilla, molasses, and SN Cinnamon EO one at a time. Mix thoroughly. Add the buttermilk and bran and stir to combine. In a separate bowl, mix all dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix just until combined. Fold in apples and nuts gently.

Fill muffin tin to the top but not above it with batter and place a whole pecan on top of each muffin, if desired. Bake for 20 minutes; a toothpick inserted in the middle should come out clean. If making normal sized muffins, bake for 28-30 minutes.

Enjoy!

Diffusers: A Buyer's Guide

DIFFUSERS: A buyer's guide

Have you ever wondered how to choose between all the different diffusers that Spark Naturals offers? This quick-and-dirty buyer's guide is for you!

ESTIMATED RUNNING TIME:
For many people, this is the biggest factor in a diffuser.
-Mirage: 8-10 hours continuous.
-Dew: 4 hours continuous.
-Noor, Allay: 3-4 hours continuous.
-AromaMist: up to 3 hours continuous, up to 6 intermittent.
NOTE: We run a Dew and Allay in the store often, and typically our Dew lasted closer to 5 or 6 hours.

SIZE:
Another factor is size, since space is a commodity for many of us - especially in places like desks and bedstands!
-Mirage: 8.0" x 4.3"
-Dew: 7.1" x 4.2"
-Noor: 5.9" x 5.0"
-Allay: 4.3″ x 8.7″
-Aroma Mist: 6.5" x 3.1"
NOTE: first dimension is width, second is height. The allay has the smallest base and the tallest height, and the mirage has the largest base.

AREA COVERED:
This is a COMMON question, and here is the answer!
-Mirage, Dew, Noor, Allay: 200-300 sq ft.
-Aroma Mist: 150-200 sq ft.

LIGHT OPTIONS:
-Mirage: Full Gradient of color to choose from or will cycle, or off, **button does not glow**.
-Dew: Full Gradient of color to choose from or will cycle, or off, glowing button.
-Noor: Full Gradient of color to choose from or will cycle, or off, glowing button.
-Allay: On/Off, with glowing button
-Aroma Mist: Blue, Pink, Changing Rainbow, Off
NOTE: With the Mirage and Dew models, the first light setting when you turn it on is a revolving rainbow of lights. To choose to stay on a favorite color, simply hit the power button again. To turn the light off, hit the power button a third time. The Mirage power button does not glow, so it will run without any lights at all - making it a perfect choice for overnight diffusing!

AUTO SHUTOFF:
All of our diffusers automatically shut off when they run out of water. One less thing to worry about!

Lemon White Chocolate Popcorn

Are you a "movie person"? Why not whip up some of this AMAZING popcorn to go with the next one you watch?

Lemon White Chocolate Popcorn

Ingredients
2 bags of homestyle popcorn (microwave, or you can pop your own)
1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
1 lemon (zest)
6 drops of Spark Naturals Lemon Essential Oil

Instructions
Pop both bags of homestyle popcorn, and put into a LARGE mixing bowl (make sure there's still room to mix) after removing as many kernels as you can.

Slowly melt the white chocolate chips at 30 second increments in the microwave, and at half power. Stir in between each increment until fully melted and smooth. Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil. Stir well.

Pour 1/2 of the chocolate over the popcorn and stir well. Then pour the other half and continue to stir until all kernels are covered.

Pour out onto parchment paper and lay the popcorn out into a single layer.

Zest the lemon before slicing it open (you'll need about 2-3 Tablespoons). Immediately put 1/2 of the zest over the top of the popcorn while the chocolate is still wet. Mix/turn over the popcorn and sprinkle the remaining zest over the popcorn.

Let the popcorn sit and "harden" for about an hour, and then mix/break it up. Let finish drying/hardening and serve.

Store in an airtight container, but popcorn is best eaten by 24-48 hours after making it.

Spiders & Essential Oils

Over the last 2 weeks I feel like our house has become infested with spiders. They are everywhere and we have webs all over. However, there is a way to repel them naturally, without using any chemical sprays. If you are looking to keep spiders outside this winter, check out these 3 great methods below!

3 Homemade Spider Repellents

Peppermint: Spiders hate peppermint, so use it to keep them away! Simply mix the following ingredients in a spray bottle: A mixture of 1 part peppermint, 1 part water and a few drops of dish soap. Spray this around doors, windows and anywhere spiders like to hide in your house!

Coconut: Coconut oil and vinegar are a perfect mix to keep spiders away! This mix is especially good if you find spiders in your shower: 1 part coconut oil and 1 part vinegar, mix together in a spray bottle. Use this method in your shower, bathrooms, windows and even around all your drains in the house.

Citrus: Last but not least, citrus is a great deterrent for spiders! This is the easiest method to keep them away as you can just drop a few essential oils anywhere around the house that they show up! Use oils such as: lime, wild orange, lemon to keep them away!

Warts and Essential Oils

Warts... not a great conversation topic, but a real problem! We are asked this question all the time! Here is some great information:

For common, plantar, flat, and periungal warts Oregano is the most common and effective oil to use because of its natural antiviral properties. Frankincense has also been shown to be effective at treating warts.

Mix a blend of 1 drop of both Oregano and Frankincense. Oregano is a strong oil can can irritate softer skin, such as children’s skin. We recommend adding a carrier oil such as olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil etc to dilute the Oregano oil’s potency. You can mix these oils in a small bowl. Apply the mixture with a q-tip 2 – 3 times a day directly on the wart and surrounding area for 2 – 4 weeks or until wart goes away. We recommend continuing to apply the mixture 1 week after the wart is gone to avoid the wart coming back.

For Molluscum Warts apply Oregano topically to the bottom of feet 2 – 3 times per day. The skin on the bottom of the feet usually is not as sensitive to Oregano. We suggest using a carrier oil to dilute the Oregano oil for softer skin or young children. Consider adding lavender or tea tree essential oil to the mixture and surrounding area as well.

Nausea & Essential Oils

BACK TO THE BASICS: Nausea and morning sickness.

Many people know that ginger (and Ginger essential oil) is a classic natural remedy for nausea and morning sickness.

However, it is not the ONLY option for nausea relief. Of course, we LOVE our Digest Blend for these sorts of issues as well. Peppermint is another common anti-nausea remedy (I personally inhale peppermint when I am nauseated and it works really well for me), but it is not always recommended during pregnancy due to its stimulating nature.

If you don't like Ginger essential oil and can't do Peppermint essential oil, another fantastic option to help you cope with morning sickness is Coriander essential oil! It is gentle with a mild, sweet spicy aroma and has been used since ancient times as a digestive aid.

To use Coriander essential oil for morning sickness, you may place a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball and inhale directly, place a few drops on your abdomen and rub in a clockwise motion (diluting with carrier oil if necessary), or run it in a diffuser near you.

Addiction and Essential Oils

QUICK TIP: Addiction and essential oils!

Are you trying to break an addiction as part of your new year's resolutions? Many aromatherapists and others have long used scent and essential oils as supportive tools for breaking bad habits or addictions.

According to Essential Aromatherapy (link below), there are several essential oils which can be used to support addiction recovery, including:

-Roman Chamomile essential oil
-Clary Sage essential oil
-Bergamot essential oil
-Juniper Berry essential oil
-Lavender essential oil
-Ylang Ylang essential oil

Any combination of these essential oils would work in a diffuser, and many people believe that selecting the essential oils that smell best to you is a good practice for choosing between your options.

You could also try a massage oil (use 10-30 drops of essential oil per 1oz of carrier oil) or put a few drops in a bath.

Avoid putting Bergamot on skin before exposure to direct sunlight, though - it can increase your likelihood of a burn!

RESEARCH: Alopecia Areata

RESEARCH: Do you or someone you know have alopecia areata? Great news!

A study in Aberdeen concluded that treatment of a scalp massage with essential oils was safe and effective.

Eighty-six patients were randomized into 2 groups. The active group massaged essential oils (thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood) in a mixture of carrier oils (jojoba and grapeseed) into their scalp daily. The control group used only carrier oils for their massage, also daily.

44% of patients in the active group showed improvement compared with 15% of patients in the control group.

Thankfully, they included the recipe used for the essential oil massage! Here it is:

-2 drops Thyme essential oil
-3 drops Lavender essential oil
-3 drops Rosemary essential oil
-2 drops Cedarwood essential oil
-3ml jojoba oil
-20ml grapeseed oil

Coriander Challah Bread

I made this coriander challah bread yesterday and it was AMAZING! Challah is fantastic on its own, but the coriander essential oil added a hint of sweet spice to the dough and smelled absolutely fantastic baking. If you are inclined to bake, this is a wonderful choice!

Coriander Challah Bread
(Adapted from smitten kitchen, makes 2 loaves)
-3 3/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (about 1 1/2 packages, 3/8 ounces or 11 grams)
-1 tablespoon (13 grams) granulated sugar
-1 3/4 cups lukewarm water
-1/2 cup (118 ml) olive or vegetable oil
-5 large eggs
-2-3 drops Coriander essential oil
-1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
-1 tablespoon (14 grams) table salt
-8 to 8 1/2 cups (1000 to 1063 grams) all-purpose flour
-1/2 cup raisins (about 70 grams) per challah, if using, plumped in hot water and drained
-Poppy or sesame seeds for sprinkling (optional).

Directions
1. Proof the yeast in a bowl with the warm water and 1 T sugar.
2. Mix in the oil, then beat in 4 eggs, one at a time. Add the 1/2 cup of sugar, salt, and coriander essential oil.
3. Gradually add in the flour.
4. Knead until smooth using a dough hook or some elbow grease and a floured surface.
5. Grease a bowl and place the dough in the middle, turning once to coat. Cover with a damp towel and place in a warm location to rise for 1 hour.
6. Punch down dough and allow to rise for another half hour.
7. Knead in raisins, if using.
8. If you choose to do a traditional braid, roll into 6, 12" ropes of dough. Honestly, I found it easiest to look up a tutorial with pictures on how to do the 6-piece braid, but basically you pinch the ends together, leaving the ropes spread apart for easy braiding. Take the furthest right stand and move it over the two strands to its left. Take the second strand from the left and move it over all the way to the right. Then, take the furthest left strand and move it over the two strands to its right. Lastly, move the new second strand from the right all the way over to the far left. Then, repeat this process until you have braided the whole loaf (I'm telling you, pictures make all the difference). Either tuck the ends under for a straight loaf (pictured), or curl in a circle and join the ends.
9. Beat the last egg in a bowl and brush onto the loaves, then allow to rise another hour.
10. Place loaves on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving at least 2" between loaves. Brush with a second coat of egg and sprinkle with seeds, if using.
11. Bake for 30-40 minutes in an oven preheated to 375. Allow to cool before slicing.

Enjoy!

Oils that Improve with Age

QUICK TIP: Did you know that some essential oils IMPROVE with age much like fine wine and cheese?

While some essential oils, such as citrus and needle oils, need to be used and replaced quickly to retain potency and avoid oxidation, others actually get better the longer you keep them (it's still important to store them away from direct sunlight and heat, though)!

Here is a list of some essential oils that get better with age:

-Frankincense
-Myrrh
-Patchouli
-Sandalwood
-Vetiver

This is great news, since many of these essential oils are more expensive - turns out they're worth the investment!
