Spark Naturals Lemon Honey Tea

Lemon and honey in hot water is a classic natural remedy when you're feeling under the weather - I remember when I was introduced to it in France. I tried it the other day and added a drop of Shield blend - it tasted better in my opinion, and I loved the added essential oil boost to support my immune system!

Spark Naturals Lemon Honey Tea
-boiled water
-juice of 1/2 a lemon
-honey, to taste
-1-2 drops Spark Naturals Shield Blend

Directions: Pour the water into a large mug and add the lemon juice. Stir to combine and add honey to taste. Add Shield blend and breathe in the steam (be careful not to breathe it if it's too hot!) while waiting for it to cool. Stir and drink up!

This works great with ginger tea as well!

Dairy-Free Eggnog

Is it too early to start thinking about eggnog? I'm off dairy at the moment and was feeling sad that I'd miss out on this holiday season classic, so I decided to look for a coconut version! I'll be making this soon, for sure!

Dairy-Free Eggnog
-4 egg yolks
-2 1/4 c unsweetened vanilla almond milk
-1 - 400mL can of full-fat coconut milk
-¼ cup coconut sugar
-2 tsp pure vanilla extract
-3/4 tsp nutmeg
-1 drop Spark Naturals Cinnamon Bark essential oil
-1 drop Spark Naturals Coriander essential oil
-1 pinch allspice

Mix together all ingredients EXCEPT egg yolks in a saucepan and bring to a simmer, then reduce to low heat. Very slowly, add a cup of the warm liquid to egg yolks in a separate bowl while whisking continuously. You want to avoid turning your eggnog into scrambled eggnog! After the cup of warm liquid is incorporated, transfer the mixture to the saucepan and warm the eggnog gently just to a simmer. Simmer for 4-5 minutes. Remove from heat and serve warm or chill as desired. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top if you're feeling extra fancy!

Gluten-Free High-Protein Pumpkin Spice Waffles

I don't know about you, but once the season changes, all I can think about is pumpkin!

I made gluten-free high-protein pumpkin spice waffles this weekend and was surprised at how good they were!

Gluten-free High-Protein Pumpkin Spice Waffles
-1/4 c coconut flour
-1 scoop protein powder of choice
-1/4 tsp vanilla
-1/4 tsp baking powder
-1/4 tsp salt
-1/4 tsp baking soda
-1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
-3/4 c canned pumpkin
-4 T virgin coconut oil melted, then cooled slightly
-1 T crunchy almond butter
-1/4 c buttermilk
-5 eggs (preferably pasture-raised)
-1-2 drops Spark Naturals Shield essential oil - our Item of the Week! (or a mixture of Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Coriander, and/or Ginger essential oil)

Directions:
Preheat your waffle iron. Combine all dry ingredients with whisk. Combine all wet ingredients in a separate bowl, mixing thoroughly. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. If desired, you may add a bit more buttermilk if the batter is too dry, but it should be thick batter. Spoon it onto the waffle iron and cook per the manufacturer's instructions. Remove carefully as they have a higher tendency to crumble than glutinous waffles.

For an extra protein boost, serve with chopped toasted pecans and top with grass-fed butter (or coconut oil) and maple syrup, if desired.

TIP: if your protein powder is unsweetened, consider adding 1 tsp liquid Stevia extract or your sweetener of choice. I found it to be plenty sweet with the maple syrup and protein powder, so I didn't add any further sweetener.

Homemade Soap with Essential Oils

Do you love to make your own soaps? Spark Naturals essential oils are perfect for you to create great smelling soaps! Here is a simple way to make your own soaps if you have always wanted to try it!

Things You'll Need
1/4 cup water
Dried and pulverized herbs (optional)
Spark Naturals essential oil scents
Approximately two cups shredded Ivory soap
5-6 drops of your favorite essential oil
2 large mixing bowls
Wooden spoon
Glass plate
Soap making mold

Directions:
1-Take a handful of your crumbled herbs and place them in a mixing bowl. You can also choose to include just a single herb if you want a more concentrated scent. Some good herb choices include lavender and mint. Pour 1/4 cup boiling water over your herbs.

2-Add five or six drops of essential oil to your herb mixture. Again, the choices for the Spark Naturals essential oil would depend on your preference. Avoid mixing in too many types of oil scents so as not to end up with a strong, overpowering product.

3-Stir the mixture until the herbs and essential oils have been mixed evenly. In another mixing bowl, shred a bar of Ivory soap finely. Pour the boiling herbal water and oil mixture over the shredded Ivory soap, covering the soap shreds completely.

4-Take a wooden spoon and mix the herbal water and shredded Ivory, until the soap has melted completely. Make sure that the herb bits are evenly distributed in the soap mixture.

5-Wait around 15 to 20 minutes. The soap mixture should harden just enough for it to remain pliable, while being workable enough to press into molds without burning your skin.

6-Divide the mixture into smaller portions. You can either press the portions into the selected soap making mold, or just roll into balls. When the soap has hardened in the mold, gently remove.

To make prying the soap away from the mold easier, coat the mold with vegetable oil before pressing the soap mixture into it.

7-Let the finished soap dry for three to four days on a glass plate in an cool area of your home. After drying, enjoy your handmade soap!

Wart Care with Essential Oils

Warts... not a great conversation, but a real problem. We are asked this question all the time! Here is a great article.

For common, plantar, flat, and periungal warts Oregano is the most common and effective oil to use because of its natural antiviral properties. Frankincense has also been shown to be effective at treating warts.

Mix a blend of 1 drop of both Oregano and Frankincense. Oregano is a strong oil can can irritate softer skin, such as children’s skin. We recommend adding a carrier oil such as olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil etc to dilute the Oregano oil’s potency. You can mix these oils in a small bowl. Apply the mixture with a q-tip 2 – 3 times a day directly on the wart and surrounding area for 2 – 4 weeks or until wart goes away. We recommend continuing to apply the mixture 1 week after the wart is gone to avoid the wart coming back.

For Molluscum Warts apply Oregano topically to the bottom of feet 2 – 3 times per day. The skin on the bottom of the feet usually is not as sensitive to Oregano. We suggest using a carrier oil to dilute the Oregano oil for softer skin or young children. Consider adding lavender or melaleuca essential oil to the mixture and surrounding area as well.

Wrinkle Releaser Spray

If you are like me, you hate having to iron all of your shirts. Here is a simple way to release wrinkles.

Wrinkle Releaser Spray

Ingredients:
1 cup distilled or filtered water (find water purification systems here)
1 cup homemade vinegar laundry softener
(OR)
1 cup distilled or filtered water
1 cup white distilled vinegar
6-8 drops Spark Naturals essential oils

Directions:
Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to combine.

Note: I recommend using only colorless essential oils in this recipe so fabrics aren’t stained. Consider using essential oils like lavender, peppermint, clary sage, juniper, or rosemary for a pleasant, light scent on clothing.

1. Spray fabrics using a sweeping motion.*
2. Release wrinkles from clothing by smoothing and tugging fabric with your hands.
3. Hang clothing to dry.**

*Test wrinkle releaser on a small hidden area first for fabrics like silk or rayon that may water-spot.

**Avoid using too much homemade wrinkle releaser or fabrics will smell faintly like vinegar once dry. Experiment with different essential oils that will mask the vinegar, but will also be pleasing to your senses. My favorite is peppermint.

Easy DIY Cutting Board Cleaner

Do you love using a wooden cutting board but worry about what germs are left behind? Here is a great way to really get your cutting board clean!
Ingredients:
Coarse Salt
Spark Naturals Lemon Essential Oil

Directions:
1. Sprinkle a layer of coarse salt, such as Kosher salt, over your wood cutting board.

2. Take your bottle of Spark Naturals Lemon Essential oil and sprinkle 15-20 drops around on the cutting board.

3. Use a scrub brush and a little elbow grease to scour the board for a few minutes. The acid in the lemon oil will disinfect the board and the abrasive action of the salt will get rid of any tiny food remnants or stains that still cling to the board. If you chop foods on both sides of the board, be sure to clean them both.

4. Thoroughly rinse the board with hot water.

5. Make sure the board dries in an upright position. Excess moisture can quickly turn your wooden chopping accessory into a bacteria cafeteria. Allowing the board to dry in a vertical position will ensure that moisture leaves the board.

Break out this cleaning method on your board about once a week. For everyday use, wash your board with a mild soap or a solution of one part vinegar and one part water. The vinegar will disinfect the board and remove any lingering odors from foods, such as the delicious, but potent onions and garlic.

To prolong the life of your cutting board, oil it every so often with beeswax, or walnut, almond, mineral oil. Constant cleaning will strip natural oils from the board, which can cause it to crack. So oil it up.

10 Must-Try Diffuser Blends

10 Must-Try Essential Oil Recipes for your Diffuser

The following blends are meant to be used in a cold-air diffuser. The type of diffusers I use require a small amount of water to which the oils are added. I generally use 6-8 drops of oil per “batch.” If you don’t have one of the components, you can still try the recipe without it. Enjoy these and maybe share your favorites with us.

1. The Wake Up Blend
This is a much-loved combo, and for good reason! It’s perfect to increase alertness, or when you need a quick pick-me-up.
3 drops Wild Orange EO
3 drops Peppermint EO

2. Fresh and Clean
This blend is wonderful for creating a welcoming atmosphere in your home. It’s bright and fresh:
2 drops Lavender
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Rosemary

3. Odor Eliminator
We are animal-people, and we’ve had our fair share of “incidences” in our house. Whenever this happens, I like to diffuse this blend. It freshens up the air in no time:
2 drops Lemon
1 drop Melaleuca
1 drop Lime
1 drop White Fir
1 drop of Cilantro

4. Seasonal Support
These three oils together are spectacular for helping to maintain clear breathing and a healthy immune response. I use this blend especially during the spring and summer months.
2 drops Lavender
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Peppermint

5. Citrus Explosion
I love diffusing citrus blends when we have company coming over. It makes my house smell happy and clean.
1 drop Lemon
1 drop Lime
1 drop Wild Orange
1 drop Grapefruit
1 drop Bergamot

6. Take a Deep Breath Blend
I tend to be a very high-energy person. The good part of that? I get a lot done. The bad part? I have a hard time settling down sometimes…
I adore this blend for the evenings when I’m trying to slow my brain down, and I also like to diffuse it in the bedroom as I fall asleep:
1 drop Bergamot
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Patchouli
1 drop Ylang Ylang

7. Respiratory Blend
Use this blend to boost respiratory function–especially during cold and flu season.
1 drop Lemon
1 drop Lime
1 drop Peppermint
1 drop Rosemary
1 drop Eucalyptus

8. Flower Garden Blend
Want your home to smell like a flower garden in full bloom? Try this one:
2 drop Clary Sage
2 drop Geranium
2 drop Lavender
2 drop Roman Chamomile

9. The Man-Cave Blend
I think this combo smells very masculine and woodsy…
2 drops White Fir
2 drops Cypress
2 drops Wintergreen

10. Bug Repellent Blend
This combo isn’t one that I’d necessarily wear as perfume, but it contains a collection of oils that most creepy-crawlies dislike:
1 drop Lemongrass
1 drop Melaleuca
1 drop Thyme
1 drop Eucalyptus
1 drop Rosemary
