DIY Vegan Lanolin

Do you suffer from dry and cracked skin, especially during winter months? We have the PERFECT DIY project for you: Vegan Lanolin. You'll want to bookmark this one for holiday giftmaking!

Vegan Lanolin (perfect for dry, cracking skin!)
-4 T castor carrier oil
-2 T cocoa butter
-2 T shea butter
-10 drops Spark Naturals Myrrh or Lavender essential oil

Directions: Combine the castor oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter in a small saucepan or double boiler over low heat, and warm until the solids are just melted. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. Stir a few times to blend the mixture thoroughly. Add the essential oil directly to the storage container, then slowly pour in the oil mixture. Gently stir to blend. Cap and label the container and set it aside until the balm has thickened.

NOTE: Unlike beeswax, cocoa and shea butters take a long time to completely thicken, and this formula may need up to 24 hours, depending on the temperature of your kitchen. The salve may continue to change texture slightly for another 24 hours.

To use: Massage a dab of the balm into feet or hands at least twice daily to seal in moisture.

BONUS: This formula makes a wonderful conditioner for dry, brittle nails and ragged cuticles! It can also be used as a lip balm or winter-weather facial shield during extreme outdoor exposure to protect your face.

Easy Dairy-Free Homemade Truffles

RECIPE: Quick and simple homemade truffles! Try this foolproof recipe for making your own DAIRY-FREE homemade truffles flavored with essential oils. Another GREAT one to keep handy for the holidays, especially for friends and family with dietary restrictions!

EASY Dairy-Free Homemade Truffles
-1/4 c cocoa or raw cacao powder
-2.5 tsp agave, maple syrup, or coconut nectar (low glycemic)
-1 tsp melted virgin coconut oil
-1 drop essential oil - try Wild Orange, Peppermint, Lemon, Lime, Bergamot, Tangerine, Coriander, or Cinnamon Bark (if using Cinnamon bark, be sure to use the toothpick method - drop a drop on a toothpick and swirl it in the mixture, to taste).

Directions: Gently melt the coconut oil in a double boiler or in a saucepan at a very low heat on your stovetop. Measure cocoa or cacao powder into a bowl and add melted coconut oil and sweetener. Mix to combine and add essential oil to taste. Transfer to the fridge to cool until it is easy to roll the substance. Roll in cocoa powder and/or spices (for instance, rolling truffles with Wild Orange essential oil in a mixture of cocoa powder and cinnamon would be delicious!) to coat. Store in refrigerator until ready to eat.

OPTIONAL: If you wish to add vanilla extract, we suggest adding 1/2 tsp and reducing the sweetener to 2 tsp. For a creamier texture, reduce the sweetener by 1 tsp and replace with 1 tsp coconut cream.

Lemon White Chocolate Popcorn

Do you LOVE movies? Why not whip up some of this AMAZING popcorn to go with the next one you watch?

Lemon White Chocolate Popcorn

Ingredients
2 bags of homestyle popcorn (microwave, or you can pop your own)
1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
1 lemon (zest)
6 drops of Spark Naturals Lemon Essential Oil

Instructions
Pop both bags of homestyle popcorn, and put into a LARGE mixing bowl (make sure there's still room to mix) after removing as many kernels as you can.

Slowly melt the white chocolate chips at 30 second increments in the microwave, and at half power. Stir in between each increment until fully melted and smooth. Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil. Stir well.

Pour 1/2 of the chocolate over the popcorn and stir well. Then pour the other half and continue to stir until all kernels are covered.

Pour out onto parchment paper and lay the popcorn out into a single layer.

Zest the lemon before slicing it open (you'll need about 2-3 Tablespoons). Immediately put 1/2 of the zest over the top of the popcorn while the chocolate is still wet. Mix/turn over the popcorn and sprinkle the remaining zest over the popcorn.

Let the popcorn sit and "harden" for about an hour, and then mix/break it up. Let finish drying/hardening and serve.

Store in an airtight container, but popcorn is best eaten by 24-48 hours after making it.

Study: Melissa essential oil & Diabetes

RESEARCH: While we most often hear about Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) for its antiviral or calming properties, this FASCINATING study looks at its anti-diabetic effects on type-2 diabetic mice!

The study had several interesting findings, including:

-Melissa essential oil had strong antioxidant activity (Since oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species could cause diabetes and its complications, appropriate intake of antioxidative nutrients, such as Melissa EO, may be beneficial to prevent or ameliorate diabetic symptoms or complications)

-Melissa essential oil supplementation significantly reduced plasma glucose levels compared with the control group, and augmented glucose tolerance in a type 2 diabetic model. Serum insulin concentrations were increased significantly in the EO group compared with the control group.

This one focused on the effect of Orange essential oil on dental patients.

It found that compared to the controls, women who were exposed to orange odor had a lower level of state anxiety, a more positive mood, and a higher level of calmness. They commented that their data supported the previous notion of sedative properties of the natural essential oil of orange (Citrus sinensis).

We're always a fan of Melaleuca for cold sores, but we've got two more suggestions to add to the arsenal:

Option 1: Eucalyptus alone or with Bergamot essential oil

Combine Eucalyptus essential oil and Bergamot essential oil in a 50/50 ratio. Use a cotton swab to apply directly to the cold sore at the first signs (tingling, discomfort) and repeat 2-3 times daily until symptoms subside.

NOTE: If you live in a sunny climate, just use Eucalyptus essential oil or be sure to protect your lips from sun exposure as Bergamot can photosensitize. Use a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin - we recommend virgin coconut oil.

Option 2: Peppermint essential oil

Use peppermint essential oil in the same manner as above. Use a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin - we recommend virgin coconut oil.

Candida Blend with Essential Oils

Candida: not a fun topic, but definitely a real issue!

In The Aromatherapy Companion (available on sparknaturals.com), Victoria Edwards shares this Candida Blend:

-2 drops Lavender essential oil
-2 drops Melaleuca essential oil
-2 drops Myrrh essential oil

To use, apply via one of the following methods:

Option 1: Silk Sponge
Use the blend vaginally with a silk cosmetic sponge soaked in a warm, sterilized-water solution. You cna purchase from your druggist a sterile "silk" or natural sponge, that will work quite well. Tie a length of (unflavored) dental floss to the sponge, leaving a 4" "tail" for convenient retrieval. Disperse the essential oils blend into a cup (235 ml) of warm, sterilized (previously boiled) water. Immerse the sponge. Gently squeeze out the excess moisture - so it is not dripping - and insert the sponge into the vagina, leaving it overnight. You can wear a sanitary pad for security.

Option 2: Bolus
Use the blend vaginally in a bolus. Also called ovules, boluses are female vaginal suppositories that are used to treat vaginal infections. You can easily make your own with a cocoa butter base.

Cocoa Butter Base Bolus:
2oz (60 ml) cocoa butter
1oz (30g) white clay
Essential oil blend (above)

Melt the cocoa butter over low heat. Add the clay and essential oils. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator until the cocoa butter just begins to harden. Form in boluses, about the size and shape of the tip of your pinky finger. Place on a sheet of wax paper in the refrigerator. When they have hardened, store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator.

To use: Insert one bolus vaginally each night before bed. Continue until symptoms disappear.

DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Ahhh. Don’t you just love cleaning the bathroom?
Especially if it's a boy’s bathroom. This last weekend I was helping on a cattle ranch and wish I had brought some of this with me. I know we all cringe because you know exactly what I mean. Here is a great natural way to clean your toilets. Enjoy!

Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner Recipe:
2 cups vinegar
1 cup baking soda
5 drops Spark Naturals Melaleuca essential oil

Sprinkle the baking soda in the toilet bowl, covering the surface of the bowl as much as possible. Drop in the essential oil around the bowl, then drizzle the vinegar over the baking soda.

When the vinegar and baking soda collide, a reaction will occur that causes it to start bubbling and fizzing. This natural bubbling will help to clean the toilet. Also, the Spark Naturals Melaleuca essential oil has antimicrobial benefits that will help to disinfect and kill any bacteria in the toilet.

When it stops fizzing, use a toilet brush or a rag to scrub the toilet bowl to help remove any remaining spots. Flush the toilet to rinse it. Repeat if necessary, for stubborn stains.
