Glioblastoma Multiforme & Melissa EO

Today, we came across an exciting research article that investigated the potential of Melissa essential oil in the treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a rare but very aggressive and tragic form of brain tumor that recently made national news due to Brittany Maynard, who was diagnosed with this currently incurable illness and became an outspoken advocate for the Death with Dignity movement. We express our heartfelt sympathies to her loved ones at this time.

The study acknowledges that current treatments for GBM are not effective. It investigated the activity of the Melissa essential oil and its major component (citral) in GBM cell lines. Both the essential oil and citral decreased the viability and induced apoptosis (cell death) of GBM cells as demonstrated by DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 activation.

BOTTOM LINE: These results show that Melissa essential oil, through its major component, citral, may be of potential interest for the treatment of GBM.

While more research needs to be done, we support any and all efforts to find new, better, and especially natural treatments to such tragic diseases! Our hearts go out to any and all who have been affected by these or other incurable diseases.
